OnePlus CEO Pete Lau thanks Apple, here’s why
NEW DELHI: After much fanfare, OnePlus has taken the wraps off its latest flagship smartphone — OnePlus 5. One of the key highlights of the smartphone is its dual rear camera set-up. In an interview to The Verge, the company’s CEO Pete Lau claimed OnePlus 5’s dual-camera is “the highest resolution dual-camera system on a smartphone today.”
And wonder who the company is thanking for its new camera feature? Cupertino giant Apple. Lau told The Verge, “We have to thank Apple for educating the market for us.” Apple iPhone 7 Plus features both an 28mm wide-angle lens and a 56mm telephoto lens at the back.
Incidentally, the OnePlus 5 smartphone has its rear camera at the same spot as iPhone 7 Plus. Commenting on this, the company’s imaging director Simon Liu told The Verge, “It’s a little difficult to make two cameras, two holes in the back not look ugly.”
He further added that OnePlus had also looked at dual cameras in the past, but the components available at the time could not withstand the daily rigors of life in a smartphone. Liu claimed, “the system in the OnePlus 5 is fused together, so one camera can’t shift position away from the other.”

OnePlus 5 features 16MP + 20MP dual rear cameras. The primary rear camera is 16MP sensor (Sony IMX398) which comes with f/1.7 aperture and the secondary 20MP (Sony IMX350) telephoto zoom lens that comes with f/2.6 aperture. The dual cameras even offer a depth effect mode that keeps the selected subject in focus and blurs the background.

The smartphone, as OnePlus claims, is 7.25mm slim and is lighter than its predecessor OnePlus 3T. This makes OnePlus 5 the slimmest smartphone by the company to launch so far. In terms of specifications, the handset the 5.5-inch full-HD (1080×1920 pixels) Optic Amoled display, similar to OnePlus 3T. It is powered by the flagship mobile processor, the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 and comes in two variants — 6GB RAM with 64GB internal storage and 8GB RAM with 128GB internal storage. Supporting Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity along with NFC, GPS, WiFi and 4G LTE, the OnePlus 5 has a fingerprint sensor at the front below the display that is claimed to unlock the device in 0.2 seconds.

OnePlus 5 will launch in India on June 22. The smartphone will go on sale on Amazon India’s website at 4.30 pm.
